Two grown up kids and a van – Day 10

Day 10 – Tuesday 9th May 2017
Carmel CA to – Santa Clarita CA

We woke up early and I was 10/10 keen to get going, as I can smell 6 flags we are so close! First we tried to follow the 1 down the coast further, but the HWY was closed, we decided to keep driving down there for a bit as there was a sea otter refuge where you can see them playing in the ocean, but the website forgot to mention that you need a guided to tour to get there and it’s only available on specific days. Damn! It was another scary/awesome coastal drive with some spectacular views, but it was a 40 min trip for nothing, as we had to turn around and drive all the way back to Carmel to take the main HWY south.

There was a silver lining to our detour though, on our way to the highway we happened to drive past Laguna Seca, a famous race track which is featured in most racing games that Tony played as a kid. It was a nice blast from the past and a bit of a thrill to see the actual racetrack, exactly the same as he remembered it!

We are truly out in the middle of nowhere now. No more mountains, the horizon is dead flat for as far as the eye can see.

We get onto the 5 south, and with a breath of excitement, it’s getting warmer, and it’s starting to look familiar! We booked it straight to 6 Flags Magic Mountain, made it with a few hours to spare before closing and hopped on the river log ride first to cool off! We got completely soaked, it wasn’t necessarily a scary ride, but there was an added level of intensity as last year there was a malfunction on this exact same style of ride at Dreamworld and 4 people died :/ we survived! Time to take Tony on all my favourite rides. Yes, I’m a bit of a themepark nut! Amazingly there was either little or no line at all and we got to walk straight onto most rides! If you ever plan a trip to 6 Flags, this is the time of year to go, in summer the average line is between 60 and 90 mins, or if you’re ballin it’s worth purchasing a flash pass to reserve rides and skip 75% of the lines. It felt so good to be flying on Tatsu and spinning like crazy on X2 again!

Booked a hotel for a couple of nights and crashed early. We’ve got a full day of roller coasters tomorrow!
